Something very nice has happened at Auckland, NZ

From cricinfo:

What an amazing win for the home side and with that have taken the series 2-0 and have also managed to topple Australia from their No.1 spot in the ICC rankings.

Aha! Isn’t that neat?! Two effortless and consecutive victories for New Zealand over the favourites and hitherto unchallenged world cricket dominators: Australia. The first match was won by 10 wickets and the second by 5 wickets and an over to spare while chasing a score of 337 for victory. This means the Kiwis have won the 3 match series as well.

What does this victory mean? For one thing, as the little excerpt says, Australia have at last lost their No.1 spot in the ICC ODI cricket rankings. The other thing is that it really shows the famed Australian ‘bench strength’ in real poor light.

With Shane Warne gone, the spinners’ department is by and large empty. And with McGrath all set to retire after the World Cup and Gilchrist and Hayden not getting any younger, the era of Australian domination looks all set to be coming to an end. Of course, there still are some world class players in Hussey, Symonds, M Clarke, S Clarke and the pacy Brett Lee but maybe not enough to be world beaters.

I may be talking too early but I hope I am not as it would only augur well for the sport for some some serious competition to kick in to be the next team of unbeatables!
